About the Master in Mathematical Engineering

What’s different about this master’s?

  • There’s an active presence of companies in “Taller de Problemas Industriales”. Companies present problems which relate to the master’s contents to the students and they, with the help of an academic tutor and in some occasions a company representative, will attempt to solve them. Some students even do an internship in the company while writing the project.
  • We use the most advanced software, not only in the academic but entrepreneurial world.
  • Classes are taught via videoconferencing system.
  • Classes are recorded and students can get access to the online notes.
  • We participate in Erasmus Mundus programs admitting students from outside Europe. We had students from Uzbekistan in the past and therefore some of the classes were taught in English.
  • We have recently created a group on LinkedIn to keep in contact with all the previous students.

What knowledge, in addition to that which was gained during my first degree, will I acquire?

You will improve your knowledge in mathematical engineering, which is very demanded by European industries nowadays. The computational models and mathematical techniques are important R&D tools and we want our students to be able to apply them into the entrepreneurial world.

Main aims:

  1. To understand the problems you come across in the engineering and applied sciences fields in order to obtain good mathematical models.
  2. To determine the model of a process and mathematically formulate it.
  3. To select the adequate numerical techniques in order to solve a mathematical model.
  4. To know and use professional software for process simulation.
  5. To develop new applications for numerical simulation following the company’s requirements.

Who teaches the master’s degree? Where do classes take place? And when was the master’s course taught for the first time?

The master’s degree carried out by the 3 Galician universities (USC, UDC, UVigo) since 2006-2007 (RD 56/2005), is taught using a videoconferencing system.

How to register

What are the required qualifications?

Most common first degrees are: maths, physics and engineering. However you can also access the master’s degree through experimental and health sciences and any other technical courses. Also business studies, actuarial sciences, economics tend to be popular.

In the previous six editions we had students from the mathematical, engineering and physics fields.

What are the selection criteria and how many vacancies are there?

Students are selected on their academic record.

There are 20 vacancies, 5 of them for foreigners.

Can I register in the master’s course even though I have not finished my first degree?

In UVigo you can register following the so-called “continuing training” method. If you finish your first degree by the second semester, you will become a full master student.

What are the registration fees?

Master’s degree prizes are fixed by the Galician government. This academic course 2012/2013 the ECTs credit is at 31,36€ (1st time registration) and 38,54€ (2nd time registration).

Do I have to attend classes in the university I register in or can I use other university facilities?

  • Your student record will be held at the university you register, however you will get access to the libraries and the “virtual campus platform” in the other universities.
  • You can attend classes and sit exams in any of the universities.
  • In the software modules is possible to be away from the class. Using the videoconferencing systems and Team Viewer the teacher can see your screen and answer any questions you might have.

Teaching Organization and Subject Validation

How are the classes organized and what is the timetable?

  • The first year of the masters course is divided into four parts each lasting two months (modules I-V).
  • In the “timetable document” you can see the four different parts and the place where each subject is taught.
  • In the “retake document” you can see the exam calendar and the final project reading date.
  • Most of the classes are taught via videoconferencing system, but some of the software and practical ones.

The master’s rooms are:

  • All the teachers provide the students with supporting materials. These are sent to them either by email or using the virtual campus platform.

Are there any online notes available? How can I get access to them?

Yes, as we have already mentioned in the material section.

From every class there is an audio and image file (small format). This format will allow you to read the documents and follow the teacher’s indications.

I have already taken some of the subjects, is it possible to validate them and keep the same mark?

If the subjects were from the “Segundo Ciclo” (4th and 5th year-old studies plan) is possible to validate them, keeping the mark. If they are from “Primer Ciclo” (1st, 2nd, 3rd year-old studies plan), it is possible to ask the masters’ commission to validate them.

What is the evaluation process? How many exam opportunities are there?

Both exams and essays will form the total mark. There are two exam opportunities, one at the end of every part (2 months) and another one in July.

The final master’s project is read in front of a 3-member tribunal (one from each university).

What is “Taller de Problemas Industriales” (Workshop on Industrial Matters) about?

Companies present problems to the students from their fields of work. Students need to solve those using numerical methods. Some of these problems are later developed into the final master’s project.

Is there a specific way of designating the master projects? Will I have a tutor both in the company and the university? When will the final projects be read?

  • Module VI (project) is compulsory (3rd semester).
  • Main aim is to get the students closer to the industrial world. One of the project directors will have a PhD.
  • The reading dates will be published in the calendar. From last year onwards the projects are read using the videoconferencing system.

Once I finish with the master’s, will I still receive information about job offers and other events?

  • Yes. From the 1st master edition we inform the students about job offers, courses, seminars etc.
  • We have recently created a group in Linked In “Master en Ingeniería Matemática - Egresados”, with more than 30 members, and which we hope will become a platform for collaboration among all the masters’ students.
